Bermondsey Roller Club is a fluid intervention - where movement, water and urban space converge beneath the arches.
Rolling Forward: Movement, Space and Adaptation
Inspired by the kinetic energy of 80s roller skating culture, this project reimagines movement within urban space. It embraces fluid motion, the relationship between skaters and their surroundings, and the nostalgic vibrance of a bygone era. Beneath the railway arches, Bermondsey Roller Club transforms underutilised space into a dynamic landscape - where wheels carve fleeting paths, rainwater shapes the terrain and skating becomes both communal and immersive.

Problem
Problem
Repurposing railway arches into a rain garden and skating hub, addressing the lack of activated urban spaces while improving water management. By integrating movement and ecology, it transforms overlooked infrastructure into a dynamic, community-driven environment.
The below pictures highlight a common issue in urban infrastructure - spaces beneath railway viaducts often remain underutilised, serving as little more than functional voids disconnected from public life. Despite their structural potential, these areas lack activation and community integration. Additionally, impermeable surfaces contribute to poor water management, exacerbating urban runoff and limiting ecological resilience. Without intervention, these spaces remain stagnant, failing to offer social or environmental value.

Solution
Solution
Bermondsey Roller Club transforms urban infrastructure into a vibrant, adaptive space. A rain garden improves water management and biodiversity, while the skating hub fosters movement and social interaction, reshaping the site into a dynamic, community-driven environment.
Bermondsey Roller Club transforms these overlooked spaces into a dynamic, adaptive environment. By integrating a rain garden, it enhances water management, mitigating runoff while fostering biodiversity. The skating hub introduces movement and interaction, creating an accessible space for recreation and community engagement. Together, these elements reclaim the railway arches as a site of fluid activity—where ecology and human experience coexist, reshaping urban infrastructure into something vibrant and purposeful.
